In todays episode I interview Bowulf. Kent has lost over 200 pounds and maintained the loss for 5 years. He is also an avid runner. In addition to running both half marathons and marathons, he is a volunteer firefighter. His videos have helped many low carbers avoid common mistakes and dangerous assumptions as they start the low carb lifestyle. But today we want to talk about running! What does he think about carbo loading, electrolyte replacement and just how did he fall in love with running.

The License

On friday I was confronted with a part of my job I hate. I can't give details due to confidentiality but I was faced with an elderly woman who lost her domestic partner. I have to call her to explain that she cannot get the settlement because domestic partners are not federally recognized. I couldn't make the call. I have to on Monday and it's breaking my heart. Speaking to surviving spouses is always difficult and touchy. Telling them that they are not recognized and will not receive money due to their partners just makes it worse.

Many people think the domestic partner law is enough or equal to marriage. It is not. It means no ability for a partner to move together is one is in the military. No fiance visa. No health insurance is only one partner has a job that provides it. No social security death benefits. No rights to settlements from legal suits if the partner dies during claims processing. No discounts on life insurance, car insurance, home owners insurance, health club memberships. No right to stand by the bedside if the "family" doesn't want them too and their partner isn't able to object. It means kids may not get visitation after a disillusion of the relationship and a lack of child support.

This isn't a rich gay issue. Upper middle class and well off homosexual couples can gain many rights through the use of a private attorney other contracts. This affects lower income couples the most. And they are the ones too busy struggling to or afraid of photos or arrest records to protest. This video is humorous and sad at the same time.

Twins in action AKA orchestra concert

This is the 5th grade orchestra concert. My son is on the left playing Viola. They have an amazing teacher (even the 4th graders had perfect timing which, if you play music will know, NEVER happens) and two hours of music a week in elementary school starting in 3rd grade. This concert include kids from three schools that only practiced together once. As a child with ADD, music has been important to both his development and self esteem.

The difference between the 5th grade orchestra and the 6th grade orchestra was HUGE. They were playing much more complicated music with separate parts and a couple solo's. At this age they have music daily with several concerts outside the school during the year. Princess starts on the left and changes place a couple times. She was concentrating so hard during the fast portions of the last song I thought she might catch fire. I'm a very proud mommy. I shouldn't have to live in an area I can't afford in order for my kids to have these opportunities with amazing teachers. From free tutoring during lunch, to weekly progress emails (from all 6 teachers). It's made a huge difference in her grades and learning. They sound like 7th-8th graders from many other schools. This should be offered at ALL schools not just the schools in areas with heavy homeownership and private donations. Cuts in school funding should never be an option.
